How these fail
- My Passport and Elements portables. The USB connector is part of the drive’s own circuit board, so the drive cannot simply be moved to another enclosure.
- Hardware encryption. Many My Passport and My Book models encrypt everything on the drive, even with no password set. The original board, or the data stored on it, is needed to read the files.
- Slow, then gone. A WD drive that becomes very slow and then stops being detected often has a firmware fault, which is recoverable.
- Clicking. A head fault. Switch the drive off.
Before you send it
- Switch the device off and leave it off.
- Do not format, initialize or run repair tools.
- For a NAS, RAID or server, send every drive, numbered by bay or slot.
- Tell us which files or folders matter most.
Questions
Can I put my My Passport drive in another case to get the data?
Usually not. Most have no SATA connector, and many are encrypted by the original board.
My WD drive is detected but shows no files. What does that mean?
Often a firmware or bad-sector problem. Do not run repair tools on it.
