- Four-bay and five-bay: DS418, DS420+, DS423+, DS918+, DS920+, DS923+, DS1520+, DS1522+

How these fail
- Volume crashed or degraded. One drive too many has dropped out. Do not choose Repair or re-create the volume.
- Blinking blue power light. The unit cannot finish starting; on some older models this is a hardware fault and the drives are fine.
- SHR and Btrfs. Synology Hybrid RAID is built on standard Linux RAID and LVM, so the volume can be rebuilt from images of the drives.
- A failed DSM update. Do not reinstall DSM: it can overwrite the system partitions.
Before you send it
- Switch the device off and leave it off.
- Do not format, initialize or run repair tools.
- For a NAS, RAID or server, send every drive, numbered by bay or slot.
- Tell us which files or folders matter most.
Questions
Can I move the drives to a new Synology?
Sometimes, if the old unit failed and the drives are healthy. If the volume has crashed, a new unit will not fix it.
Do you need the DiskStation or only the drives?
The drives hold the data. Number them by bay before removing them.
