How these fail
- MQ01 laptop drives. After a knock the heads can stick to the platters, and the drive buzzes or stays silent.
- Canvio portables. Many have the USB port built onto the drive’s board, so there is no SATA connector to fall back on.
- Bad sectors. Older DT01ACA drives often fail gradually, with slow reads and freezes before they stop.
Before you send it
- Switch the device off and leave it off.
- Do not format, initialize or run repair tools.
- For a NAS, RAID or server, send every drive, numbered by bay or slot.
- Tell us which files or folders matter most.
Questions
My Canvio drive lights up but does not appear. Can it be recovered?
Often. It may be the USB board, the firmware or the heads; the evaluation tells us which.
Is a Toshiba drive the same as Dynabook?
Dynabook is the laptop brand. The drives are made by Toshiba.

Call us or book online and tell us the make, the model and what is going wrong. For IT support a technician comes to your home or office. For a repair we pick the computer up from your door, fix it at our own workshop in Burbank and bring it back. We have no storefront, so there is nowhere to drop a machine off. Outside our area, you can mail it to us.
