Seagate drives are the ones we recover most, simply because there are so many of them. Desktop, laptop, NAS and external models all come through our workshop.

How these fail
- ST1000LM035 and ST2000LM007. These thin laptop drives are inside most Backup Plus and Expansion portables. A knock is often enough to damage the heads.
- ST3000DM001. A 3TB model with a well-documented high failure rate.
- Barracuda 7200.11. A firmware fault can lock the drive so it is no longer detected. The data is intact and recoverable.
- Clicking or beeping. Clicking points to the heads; a beep usually means the motor cannot spin because the heads are stuck to the platters.
Before you send it
- Switch the device off and leave it off.
- Do not format, initialize or run repair tools.
- For a NAS, RAID or server, send every drive, numbered by bay or slot.
- Tell us which files or folders matter most.
Questions
My Seagate external drive beeps and does not show up. Is the data gone?
Usually not. Beeping means the drive cannot spin up. Stop plugging it in; each attempt can scratch the platters.
Can you recover a Seagate drive that is not detected at all?
In many cases, yes. Firmware faults and failed circuit boards both leave the data on the platters.

Call us or book online and tell us the make, the model and what is going wrong. For IT support a technician comes to your home or office. For a repair we pick the computer up from your door, fix it at our own workshop in Burbank and bring it back. We have no storefront, so there is nowhere to drop a machine off. Outside our area, you can mail it to us.
